What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies include local storage, pixels and device identifiers. Cookies can be "first-party" (set by this site) or "third-party" (set by another company whose content or code appears on the page, such as an advertising network).
Cookies we set ourselves
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| cn_cookie_ack_v1 | Local storage (first party) | Remembers that you dismissed the cookie notice so it is not shown again. | Until you clear browser data |
Third-party cookies
Advertising
Advertising on the site is served by Google AdSense and, through it, other advertising partners. These services may set
cookies (for example Google's IDE, __gads and __gpi cookies) to serve ads, limit how
often you see the same ad, measure ad performance and, if you have consented or where consent is not required, show ads
based on your interests. Google explains its advertising cookies at
policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.
Analytics
If analytics is enabled, it may set cookies (for Google Analytics, _ga and _ga_*) to distinguish
visitors and measure how pages are used in aggregate.
Embedded content
We generally avoid embedding third-party content. If an article ever embeds a video or social post, the provider may set its own cookies when that content loads.
Your choices
- Consent tool. In regions where consent is required, a consent dialog is shown before advertising cookies are used. You can reopen it at any time from the link it provides to change your choice.
- Personalised ads. Opt out at Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu.
- Browser settings. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies. Blocking all cookies will not break this site, since reading does not depend on them.
Changes
We will update this page if the cookies used on the site change, and update the date above.
