Are coding bootcamps still worth it? An honest read for 2026

The junior developer market has changed since 2023. Who bootcamps still work for, what to ask before paying, and what a realistic 12-month path looks like.

In 2021 a coding bootcamp was a defensible bet. Twelve to sixteen weeks, a portfolio of three projects, and a junior role at a company that needed anyone who could write a React component and sit through standup. Plenty of people made that trade and it paid off. That market no longer exists, and anyone selling you a bootcamp on the basis of 2021 outcomes is selling you something that has already happened.

The honest answer to “are they still worth it” is: for a narrower group of people than before, for a narrower set of target roles, and only when the bootcamp is one piece of a longer plan rather than the plan itself. This article explains what changed, who still comes out ahead, the questions that make a bootcamp salesperson uncomfortable, the cheaper routes, and what a realistic twelve months looks like.

What changed after 2023

Several things happened at once, and they compound.

The tech layoffs of 2022 and 2023 put a large number of experienced developers back on the market. When a company can hire someone with four years of production experience for close to what it used to pay a junior, it does. Junior roles did not vanish, but the people filling them changed.

Job postings fell and stayed down. Indeed’s Hiring Lab has tracked software development postings running well below their pre-pandemic level since 2023, and the recovery in other sectors did not show up in software to the same degree. Whatever the exact figure in your country, the direction is not in dispute: fewer openings, more applicants per opening.

AI coding assistants changed what a junior developer is for. The tasks bootcamps traditionally trained people to do (build a CRUD app, wire up a form, write boilerplate tests) are now the tasks that tools do fastest. Employers are still working out what an entry-level developer should do in that world, and while they work it out, many have simply stopped hiring at that level. Some argue this is short-sighted, since you cannot have senior engineers in five years without juniors today. They may be right. It does not help you this year.

The bootcamp industry itself contracted. Several well-known providers closed, shrank or changed hands. In 2024 the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau took action against BloomTech (formerly Lambda School) over how it marketed its income share agreements and its job placement claims. That case is worth reading before you sign anything, because the practices it describes were not unique to one school.

Put together: a bootcamp certificate on its own, with no other technical background, no degree, and no network, now gets you very few interviews. The roles exist, but they go to people who have the certificate plus something else.

Who bootcamps still work for

The “something else” is the whole question. Bootcamps still produce good outcomes for these groups.

People already in an adjacent job. QA testers, support engineers, data analysts, operations staff, designers, technical writers, Salesforce admins. If you already work near the code and your employer has a habit of moving people internally, a bootcamp gives you the missing skills and your employer gives you the role. Internal transfers are the single most reliable route into development right now.

People with a quantitative degree and no practical skills. A physics, economics or engineering graduate who can already think in systems needs the applied part. A bootcamp is an efficient way to get it, and the degree answers the filter that the certificate cannot.

People aiming at adjacent roles, not pure software engineering. QA automation, solutions engineering, implementation consulting, technical support engineering, internal tools, low-code and platform developers (Salesforce, ServiceNow, Power Platform), and data analyst roles that need SQL and Python. These roles are less crowded, hire more readily from non-traditional backgrounds, and lead into engineering later. A bootcamp that is honest will tell you that a large share of its recent graduates landed in roles like these rather than in “software engineer” titles.

People in a city with a bootcamp that has real, current hiring relationships. Not a logo wall. Actual employers who hired from the last two cohorts and will take a call.

If you are none of these, a bootcamp is a poor bet at full price. A person with no technical background, no degree, no network, searching for fully remote work, expecting the certificate to generate interviews, is the profile most likely to end up with debt and no job. That was rarer in 2021. It is common now.

Questions to ask a bootcamp

Bootcamp admissions staff are salespeople, and most of them are good at it. Ask these questions in writing, and pay attention to which ones get a straight answer.

  1. “Of everyone who started a cohort twelve months ago, what percentage is now employed in a role that uses what you taught? Not everyone who graduated. Everyone who started.” The gap between the two denominators is where placement rates get inflated.
  2. “How do you define placed? Does it include part-time, contract, freelance, internships, and jobs at the bootcamp itself?” Many do.
  3. “Is your outcomes reporting audited by a third party?” The Council on Integrity in Results Reporting (CIRR) publishes a standard and audited reports for member schools. Not every good bootcamp is a member, but membership is a positive signal and refusal to explain why not is a negative one.
  4. “What was the median starting salary of the last cohort, and what share were placed within 180 days?”
  5. “Can I speak to three graduates from the last two cohorts, chosen by me from a list, not chosen by you?”
  6. “Which specific employers hired from your last cohort?”
  7. “What is the refund policy if I withdraw in week two? Week six?”
  8. “If you offer an income share agreement or deferred tuition, what is the total cap, the payment percentage, the salary threshold, and what happens if I take a job outside tech?” Treat an ISA as a loan, because regulators do.
  9. “Who teaches? What share of instructors are recent graduates of this program?”
  10. “How is the curriculum using AI coding tools, and how are you preparing people to be useful in a team that already uses them?”

If the answer to question one is a graduation rate dressed up as a placement rate, or “we don’t track it that way,” walk away. Tracking it that way is the job.

Cheaper routes to the same place

The bootcamp’s core product is structure and accountability. Those are worth something. They are not worth fifteen thousand dollars to everyone.

Free, structured curricula. The Odin Project and freeCodeCamp are complete, free, project-based web development curricula. Harvard’s CS50 is free online and is a better grounding in fundamentals than most bootcamps provide. The drawback is that nobody is chasing you, and a large share of people stop in week three. That is also useful information: if you cannot finish 60 hours of free material, do not spend money on 400 hours of paid material.

Community college. A certificate or associate degree in software development or computer information systems costs a fraction of a bootcamp, is eligible for financial aid, and comes with an actual credential. It is slower. For many people the slower, cheaper route with a transferable credential is the right one.

Software apprenticeships. In the UK, Level 4 software developer apprenticeships are paid jobs with training funded by the apprenticeship levy, and large employers run them every year. In the US, registered software apprenticeships exist and are growing, listed at apprenticeship.gov and run by intermediaries and some large employers. In Canada, provincial programs and employer-run tech apprenticeships are patchier but exist. Apprenticeships are the one route that solves the “no experience” problem while paying you.

Entry certifications for adjacent tracks. If your target is support, cloud operations or data rather than pure development, the relevant certifications are cheap and some of them actually filter. Our guide to certifications employers recognize covers which ones.

A realistic 12-month path

Whether or not a bootcamp is in it, a workable year looks roughly like this.

Two notes on that table. First, months one to three are the cheapest filter you will ever get. A meaningful share of people who think they want to be developers discover during this phase that they do not enjoy the actual work, and they discover it for free. Second, the application phase is not a volume game. Ten well-researched applications a week, each with a reason you fit that team, beat a hundred generic ones, particularly as employers lean harder on automated screening.

What to do before you pay anyone

Do the free sixty hours first. Finish CS50 or the first section of The Odin Project. If you get to the end and still want more structure and faster progress, you are the kind of person a bootcamp can help, and you will get far more out of it than someone starting cold. If you do not get to the end, you have saved yourself a great deal of money and learned something true about yourself, which is a better outcome than most bootcamp graduates got in 2024.
